Jambiseru.com – Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo has revealed that the institution is preparing to issue Digital Rupiah in the near future.
This plan is also included in the SPI 2030 Blueprint published by BI.
In addition to Digital Rupiah, the Blueprint outlines the strengthening of Infrastructure, Industry, Innovation, and Internationalization of the payment system in Indonesia.
Perry stated that issuing digital currency by BI is essential as more young people are accustomed to making electronic transactions. This younger generation, he noted, differs from the older generation, which prefers paper money.
“Generations Y, Z, and especially Alpha are increasingly reluctant to use paper money. They are now accustomed to electronic money, everything QRIS, everything online,” said Perry in his presentation at the GBI Talk on the Blueprint of the Indonesian Payment System 2030 event on Friday (August 2, 2024).
He added that the plan to issue Digital Rupiah has entered its final stage. BI has also completed the proof of concept phase.
Currently, the central bank is determining the technology that will be used to ‘mint’ its first digital currency. Once the technology is decided, BI will conduct a trial by circulating Digital Rupiah to banks.
