This shocking case is certainly not something that should be emulated, as cats are not considered edible animals. This also emphasizes that cat meat is not a cure for diabetes, contrary to the beliefs of the viral landlord.

“It’s absolutely wrong to behave like this (eating cat meat). It’s completely nonsense,” said Health Expert Dr. Dicky Budiman when contacted by iNews.id on Thursday (August 8, 2024).

Dr. Dicky further explained that it is very misguided to believe that cat meat can cure diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that, among other factors, is caused by the impaired function of the pancreas in producing insulin.

Another cause of diabetes is insulin resistance due to overweight or obesity. This means that what we consume can play a role in the onset of diabetes risk.

“Now, eating cat meat, well, that’s a very strange way of thinking. If someone is already diagnosed with diabetes, they need to control their diet. But this person is eating something strange like cat meat,” said Dr. Dicky.

“By eating cat meat, it actually poses a high risk of introducing diseases into the body. Carnivorous animals like cats, if consumed, can have harmful effects on health, even causing zoonosis (diseases transmitted from animals to humans),” he added.

So, in response to the news of a man in Semarang eating cat meat to cure diabetes, Dr. Dicky stressed that this should not be imitated, as it is very misguided.

“This case is also a reminder for all of us that as a society, we should not blindly accept information. Check its validity first; don’t let what is conveyed bring harm,” said Dr. Dicky.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hyperglycemia, also known as elevated blood glucose or blood sugar, is the most common effect of uncontrolled diabetes.

Over time, hyperglycemia can cause serious damage to many of the body’s systems, including nerves and blood vessels.

Diabetes symptoms can appear suddenly. In type 2 diabetes, the symptoms may be mild and take years to recognize. Generally, the following are symptoms of diabetes:

  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Feeling tired
  • Unexplained weight loss

Over time, diabetes can also cause damage to blood vessels in the heart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

Many diabetics experience problems with their feet. This is due to nerve damage and poor blood circulation. This can lead to foot ulcers and, if left untreated, may result in amputation. (uda)
